General Convention Information

The 75th General Convention of the Episcopal Church will be held June 13-21, 2006 in Columbus, Ohio.  Here are the answers to a couple of questions that came up in a meeting held at St. Chad's to discuss some of the issues expected to arise at the Convention.

First question was how many deputies does each diocese have to General Convention, is it set or dependent on the size of the Diocese? Answer--Each of the Episcopal Church's domestic and foreign dioceses (and the Convocation of Churches in Europe) is entitled to elect eight deputies, four lay persons and four priests and /or deacons. These deputies make up the House of Deputies. All Episcopalian bishops, active and retired, are entitled to seat, voice and vote in the House of Bishops (unless deprived of the privilege.)

Second Question was how many diocese make up the Episcopal Church. Answer: There are 112 Diocese in the Episcopal Church, which are divided into 9 Provinces. Just an interesting note, there are more than 7,200 parishes in the Episcopal Church and approximately 2.4 million members.
