Godly Play

On Sunday mornings beginning at 9:30 AM, children 4-12 are invited to attend one of two Church School classes called Godly Play. Using Montessori techniques, the programs presents an opening prayer in which all are welcome to participate. Then there’s a lesson, often based on the Gospel text for the day and illustrated with hands-on figures and scenery to help the children visualize the parable or moment from Jesus’s life. Other lessons tell Old Testament stories that children know and love. Next they may use any of the art supplies, books, or story-telling helps in the room to create their own responses to the lesson. Finally, there is a prayer and candle-lighting ceremony, after which the children join their parent(s) in the sanctuary for the “meal” of the Holy Eucharist. On most Sundays, the children may then return to the classroom to complete their projects.

The leaders for the age 4 to second grade class are Debbie Smith and Bernice Dicks, both of whom have been certified by the Northwest Deanery to participate in the program.

The leaders for children in third through sixth grade (meeting in the Choir room) are Jonn Bernhart and Joy Eaton.
